Preschool Affirmations: Speak It Into Existence

Are you looking for a quick way to help children to be happy and successful? Try saying positive affirmations to them. This could be especially useful during our social distancing period. Affirmations encourage you to think positively about themselves. The simple act of saying affirmations to a child can help him or her to feel better as they go through life and life's challenges. Some people talk about too many compliments not being good for a child. While I am sure that this is a problem with some children, I find that there are a lot of children who do not hear positive messages enough. So, instead of being worried about giving too many compliments, think about how you can give specific compliments and compliment specific actions. In other words, try to relate your compliment to a specific act. Doing this makes the statement more of an affirmation (rather than a compliment). Did little Lexi climb a tree? Tell her that she is brave and strong for doing so? Also, think about what the individual child needs. If a child has not been told that he or she is attractive, hearing that could be just what his needed. Positive affirmations help children: gain confidence, build resistance, develop a positive outlook, counter negativity, and recognize that effort counts.

Positive affirmations can be used by both teachers and parents.

To use affirmations most effectively, say them every day, and make it a habit.

When you are using affirmations with children up through first grade, I recommend short ones, so they can remember the exact affirmation easily.

Here are five short affirmations you can use to get started with the children in your life.

• You are brave.

• You are creative.

• You are capable.

• You are good.

• You are a great friend.
