Are you excited for the Read Across America celebration? Will you read Dr. Seuss books as part of it?

In the United States, the largest annual reading event for children is Read Across America. The inaugural event was held in 1998. This event is held on March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. It is celebrated on the nearest school day to March 2nd. Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodore Geisel, was an American author, artist, book publisher, animator, poet, and political cartoonist. While, the event is sometimes referred to as Dr. Seuss Day, the purpose of the Read Across America event is to encourage children to read and become lifelong readers. Therefore, any fun reading materials may be used. I actually like to present a mixture of authors in my Read Across America events. But, I do include Dr. Seuss. Below are some of my materials f In the same vein, of course a Dr. Seuss theme can be used at any point during the year. You can do a Dr. Seuss author study by reading many of his books in a short period, or you can spread them out and read individual books as part of another theme. For instance, his book “Ten Apples On Top” is a perfect book to read in the fall during apple picking season. There are so many things on which to focus with Dr. Seuss’s books. If you are wondering what you could teach using his book, some ideas include rhyming, onomatopoeia (especially with Mr. Brown Can Moo. Can You?), letter sounds, sight words, concepts of print, patterns, counting, sorting, and more.

In addition to many schools celebrating Read Across America Day, so do many hospitals, libraries, and bookstores. How will you celebrate it? To give you some ideas of how I have used it to reinforce literacy and math skills, you can check out some of my products.

No matter what you choose to do for Read Across America, I hope you have fun reading! Cheers, Valerie Chisom, Preschool Teacher
